Training Requirements

Training for Applicants


  • Child Growth & Development/Behavior Guidance (one of the following ways): 
    • One 4-hour course: Developmentally Appropriate Behavior Guidance
    • Two 2-hour courses in Knowledge and Competency (KCF) area II.C.
    • Two 2-hour courses (1 KFC I + 1 KFC II.C.)
  • Supervising for Safety (6 or 8 hours)*
  • Pediatric CPR
  • First Aid
  • SUID - Sudden Unexpected Infant Death*
  • AHT - Abusive Head Trauma*
  • C.A.R.S. - Child Passenger Restraint (if going to transport children) 

*Department of Human Services approved trainings only. Trainings can be completed in-person or online and can be accessed on the Develop website

Training for Current Licenses Holders


  • Child Development and Learning; Behavior Guidance (two hours annually)*
Courses under Knowledge and Competency Framework Area 1 (I. Child Development and Learning) or Knowledge and Competency Framework Area 2c (II.C. Promoting Social and Emotional Development) meet this requirement. 

  • Active Supervision (two hours annually)*
Complete a two-hour active supervision course each year. 
Health and Safety I and II for Family Child Care are each required every five years. Health and Safety I and II will satisfy the active supervision training requirement in the year completed. 

  • SUID: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death*
Course is required for providers caring for children birth - 12 months of age. Course is required online or in-person every two years. On the "off year," providers can watch the DHS-approved SUID videos in lieu of the class. 

SUID and AHT videos together count toward one hour of training. Training verification is located at the bottom of the video web page and should be printed off as proof of viewing. 

  • AHT: Abusive Head Trauma*
Course is required for providers caring for children birth - 5 years of age. Course is required online or in person every two years. On the "off year," providers can watch the DHS-approved AHT videos in lieu of the class.

  • Pediatric CPR (must be in person every two years)
  • First Aid (every two years)
  • Child Passenger Restraint (every five years if transporting children)
