Drainage update 10/02/2017

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  We will be having a landowner meeting for this public ditch system to discuss recent costs and possible future costs.  Those individuals affected by this system should have been notified by mail already.  The meeting is scheduled for 2pm this Thursday October 5, at the Pioneer Bank building in Mapleton, MN.  Photo below shows just one small example of the work needed for CD35.jd11

Project Updates
:

  • CD56 (Garden City Twp.) Final areas along the open ditch are getting seeded in the next few days.  We just need to get rid of a beaver problem in one of our road crossings on this ditch and this project should be done.

  • CD56 Branch 20 tile repair (Lincoln Twp.)  Contractor has finished installing the new 18-inch tile line all the way to the old original concrete line.  We will be removing the previous HDPE tile line that has failed in multiple locations and is the reason for this current repair.  The reason for the removal is to prevent further sink hole issues.

Drainage Minutes:

Not a whole lot going on in the drainage world at this point in time.  We are currently in between projects.  We do expect JD34 to start sometime in the middle of October.  The contractor will be starting with the new pond that is being installed to reduce sediment.  The contractor will hopefully start installing the new tile lines sometime in the first part of November.  All of those schedules are tentative with ever-changing weather.  CD12 is waiting for the contractor to finish a couple of previous jobs they had.  CD12 is a county drainage system up by the new Prairie Winds middle school.  The scope of work for the project is to clean the open ditch.

On a personal note, my wife and her family are horse owners and Arabian horse show enthusiasts.  We spent the weekend up at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.  This was an Arabian horse show called Fall Fest.  Horses from all over the nation are welcome to attend, but they have to be from a certain blood line.  It’s always been a fun show, as it is kind of the last major show of the year in Minnesota for Arabian horses.  My wife did exceptionally well this year and took home three reserve champions.  We are very happy with the results and very proud as well.  Lots of hours of prep time and training go into these shows, so it’s nice when it all pays off.  I included just a couple photos of the weekend, including “Pete” my wife’s favorite horse.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of September 25 – September 22:

  • CD56 (Garden City& Lincoln Twp.)  Final areas of seeding the buffer area and some side banks of the open ditch.
  • CD56 Branch 20 (Lincoln Twp.) Contractor has finished with the new 18-inch tile installation.  The contractor will connect two intakes to this new line and then start with removing the old failed HDPE line.  We want to remove the old HDPE line because it will just cause further issues with sink hole issues.
  • JD11 (McPherson Twp.)  Just some final debris to clean out of the main channel of this large drainage system.  The storms of last season pushed lots of debris downstream.  Now that the water levels are the lowest they’ve been in over a year, we can finally get the remaining debris cleaned up.
  • CD86 (Decoria Twp.)  Monitoring the water level in the open ditch along county road 16, where we still have a nuisance beaver and dam issue.
  • CD05 (Danville Twp.)  Sediment issues on a few older road crossings.  Something to monitor for now, and a possible clean out later this fall.

Please call with issues you observe on our public drainage system, as there is a lot of open ditch and tile in our county and only two of us in the drainage department.  We will do our absolute best to service your issues and concerns as we receive them.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
