Drainage update 12/11/2017

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

·         CD48 (Cambria Twp.)  We will be having a final improvement hearing during our December 12, 2017, Board of Commissioners Meeting.  Meeting location is on second floor of Historical County Courthouse Building, in the commissioner’s room.

·         JD17 (Garden City Twp.)  We will be hosting an informal landowner meeting to discuss possible repairs / improvements to this drainage system.  Part of the discussion will be updated plans and prices.  Affected landowners will receive a mailed notice of time and location.

Project Updates
:

  • CD12 (Mankato Twp.)  The contractor has packed up for the winter and will return spring of 2018 to finish.
  • JD34 (LeRay Twp.)  Crews are still working on the westerly side of Blue Earth County Road 27.  A couple of the borings for pipe have been completed.  The new jd34sediment and retention pond is complete, minus some final seeding needed.  Crews are planning on finishing what little work they still have on the westerly side of County Road 27 and do not plan on moving easterly until next spring.  Picture to the right shows crews still installing pipe.

Drainage Minutes:

Pretty quiet time of year for drainage.  Don’t get me wrong -   we do still have projects and repairs going on, but as far as newsworthy happenings, it is pretty quiet.  Like I stated above, the only project that was still going on as of last week is JD34 which is northeast of Eagle Lake by about two or three miles.

At the moment, we have five different contractors working on 20 plus repairs, cleanings and televising projects.  We have been very fortunate to have cooperative weather this fall and early winter season.  Every year we usually have a sizable number of repairs to make and this weather definitely helps to get some of those repairs crossed off the list.  Many of these repairs get crammed into the end of the year because we often can’t fix things if there is standing crop in the area of repair.

This is a good time of year to get everything finished and things prepared for the new year.  We are looking at a pretty busy year for 2018 already.  Many of these drainage systems are 70 plus years old and reaching the end of their expected life.  Improvements and major repairs are almost expected on some of these aging systems.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of December4 – December 8:

  • CD48 (Cambria Twp.)  We had a landowner meeting to discuss some near final plan ideas for an upcoming improvement project for next year.
  • JD09 (LeRay Twp.)  I inspected a report of a tile collaJD09 tilepse.  This system is set to get an improvement starting next spring.  Picture to the right of broken tile.

  • JD45 (Mapleton Twp.)  We were unable to continue televising because of technical difficulties with the televising unit.  I’m not sure how long it will take to get back to televising, but we hope to finish later this week or early next week.
  • With meetings and not much going on, it was a pretty quiet week last week.  I was out sick on Friday which also shortened my week.  We still have a lot of cleanings and repairs I’m still hoping to get done on this side of the year, but we will see.  I know last week that there was starting to be a lot of ice forming on the drainage ditches which could make cleaning difficult.

sign
I came across this interesting sign last week.

Please call with issues you observe on our public drainage system, as there is a lot of open ditch and tile in our county and only two of us in the drainage department.  We will do our absolute best to service your issues and concerns as we receive them.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
