Drainage update 12/31/2018

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

No upcoming meetings or hearings.

Project Updates:

·         JD09 (Le Ray Twp.)  All new tile has been installed for this improvement project.  We will still have some checklist items to finish up for next spring, like some dirt work, additional cross connections, and things of that nature.  Crews actually finished up with the new pipe install just before Christmas.  We don’t expect to see crews back until Spring 2019.

·         CD48 (Cambria Twp.)   Our contractor for this improvement has been working hard and making great gains.  Part of the new main line has been installed, with most of the work lately being done to our new branch 2.  Crews took off some time for Christmas and are supposed to return back to work after the first of the year.  With the mild winter so far, we will keep installing pipe as long as we can.

·         JD34 (Le Ray Twp.)  Nothing new to report on this project from last week.

·         CD56 Branch 18 (Lincoln Twp.)  Hodgman Drainage (our contractor) has completed all of the necessary repairs for this larger repair project.  Crews actually finished up right before Christmas.  Everything should be complete and no additional checklist items should be needed.

Drainage Minutes:

With the holidays, things have slowed down a bit in the drainage world.  We finished up two major projects just before the Christmas break.  The JD09 (LeRay Township) improvement project and also the CD56 Branch 18 repair project in Lincoln Township are complete.

Our iron/sand filter project for CD56 didn’t get installed in 2018, but we still have plans to install multiple iron/sand filters for 2019.  We are trying to use some grant funds from our local SWCD, funds from the Crystal Waters Project, and also Blue Earth County Drainage funds.  Not all three groups handle funding the same, so additional time and planning is needed.

We still have multiple contractors making repairs throughout the county.  We will continue with making repairs as long as the weather cooperates.  There aren’t too many years, in recent history, where we completed all of our fall repairs list.  We have multiple contractors who work all over the county to help complete this list.

The Ground Water Protection Rule is delayed until at least after the end of the 2019 legislative session.  The revised rule is still set to be effective January 1, 2020.  We may see some additional changes yet before then.  For more reading on this subject click the link.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of December 24 – December 28:

No drainage inspections last week, due in part to holidays and vacation time.  I will be out making inspections this week, with a few new issues reported including more beaver issues.  Please keep calling in repairs and issues that you come across on our public drainage systems.  As long as we still have nice weather, we will still have contractors making repairs.  The more repairs we can get done now, the more it will help avoid the spring “last minute rush” before planting season.

Have a happy New Year, everyone.
new year

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
