Drainage update 1/7/2020

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

  • JTD83, joint county ditch with Waseca County, will be having a landowner meeting to discuss possible upcoming repairs for the 2020 season.  Details of this meeting will be mailed out to those affected landowners in this drainage system.

Project Updates:

  • CD48 (Cambria Twp.)  The general contractor has started televising the new tile that has been installed.  Televising is usually one of the last steps to closing out a project.
  • JD09 (Le Ray Twp.)  Televising on the southern portion of this improvement project was recently completed.  The northern portion of this project still needs to be televised, along with two or three small areas of tile investigation remaining.
  • JD34 (Le Ray Twp.)  No updates or changes from last week.
  • CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  We have a contractor cleaning portions of our open ditch on this system.  As part of the cleaning, areas of reshaping some side-slopes, clearing trees and brush, and adding rock around some outlet pipes is being completed.  Crews hope to finish up later this week or early next week.  Two photos below show the cleaning taking place.CD86 cleaning 2

Happy New Decade:

Happy new year and new decade to everyone.  Most of the last decade is a soggy memory.  Let’s hope that we can go into the new decade a little drier.

Just a quick update of things going on locally in this week’s blog.  Drainage and tax staff are still very busy with “end-of-year” completion.  This mainly includes processing new assessments and property splits.  This is also the time of year that we are required to update our grant paperwork.

We spend much of the colder months trying to host landowner meetings and plan for the upcoming year.  This winter has been a little different, in that we are still making repairs and televising tile lines.

We currently have a contractor completing open ditch cleanings.  One contractor making some smaller tile repairs and two contractors doing televising work.  For January in Minnesota, I’d say that is pretty remarkable.

In the next couple months, Drainage staff will be holding more landowner meetings and holding a few hearings.  We will also be getting ready to bid out a few repairs that will occur this year.  Buffer maintenance contracts will be going out for quote solicitation.  We will be handling our buffer maintenance a little different than years past.  Buffer maintenance would include weed and brush spraying and also mowing of our ditch systems with perennial vegetation.

Be on the lookout for our new GIS interactive drainage map that we are hoping to debut to the public sometime this spring.  I will keep everyone updated with a more definite date for that map when we know the specifics.  The new GIS layer will be a game changer for the general public that are looking for ditch system information.  The information on this new layer will include: area of ditch or tile, tile size, material, grade of pipe, length of segment and many other supporting documents for that particular drainage system.  It will be much more than just a pretty map.

Just a quick reminder of the Crystal Waters Project in Lake Crystal is hosting their Seventh Annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza.  Raffle tickets are also being sold to benefit local water quality projects.  Some of the prizes from raffle include, cash prizes and the possibility of winning a brand-new Polaris four-wheeler.  Check out Crystal Waters Facebook page or the link provide for additional details of these events.

Recent Drainage Inspections:

  • CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  We have another issue with beavers in a portion of the open ditch.  Beavers have been an almost on-going issue for the last couple years with this ditch system.
  • CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  Cleaning of portions of our open ditch are currently going on.  We have a contractor cleaning the ditch and restoring it back to its original design capacity.  Some tree and brush clearing are also part of this repair.
  • CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  We still have a contractor trying to finish a ditch bank repair.  Things are a little tougher this time of year, as evident by the photo of the driveway to access repair site.CD28
  • JD38 (Shelby Twp.)  Televising to portions of our county tile line near the north side of Amboy, along with some cleaning around one of our large drop intakes, were completed last week.
  • CD56 (Garden City Twp.)  Despite our best efforts, we still have on-going issues with beavers in a portion of our open ditch.
  • JD28 (Decoria Twp.)  A few quick repairs and some quick televising to a small portion of the tile line.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
