Ditch Happenings February 1st - 5th

Posted on February 5, 2016 at 4:12 PM by Acacia Wytaske

At this week's Commissioner's Board Meeting, a hearing date and time was set on the Petition for Removal of Lands from County Ditch 28 (Lincoln Township). The hearing will take place on March 22nd, 2016 at 10am. A formal hearing notice will be sent to all landowners on CD28 and also published on the Blue Earth County Public Notices webpage.

The Judicial Ditch 34 (LeRay Township) Petition for Improvement was presented and the board appointed Engineer, Chuck Brandel, of I & S Group to examine the system and create an improvement report. They also ordered a Redetermination of Benefits of the system.  Typically, a Redetermination of Benefits is ordered during the Improvement Preliminary Hearing, however, because we are aware that the current benefits on this system are the original benefits assigned in 1919 and do not reflect reasonable present day land values, we requested the ROB be done now in conjunction with the ROB being done on JD09 (LeRay Township) in the same area.

Last Friday, the bids for the improvement of CD78 (Vernon Center & Garden City Townships) were opened. A bid recommendation will be presented to the Drainage Authority at the next Commissioner's Board Meeting on February 16th, 2016.

This week we sent out notices to CD56 (Lincoln & Garden City Townships) landowners to invite them to an informational meeting to discuss the findings of the watershed inventory, finalize the Multi-Purpose Drainage Management Plan, discuss the repair petition, and to discuss the Blue Earth County SWCD Grant.  The meeting will take place on Friday, February 26th from 10am - 12pm at the American Legion in Lake Crystal, MN.

Next week I'm really looking forward to attending the 2016 Rinke Noonan Drainage & Wetland Conference! This year's conference focuses on the basics of drainage, unique processes that balance necessary drainage with ecological concern and innovative processes that allow for the most efficient and productive use of farmland. I'm also expecting updates on the Buffer Strip Law that continues to be a controversial and evolving policy. Get complete details here: Drainage and Wetland Conference

No blog next week; I will be out of the office on Thursday and Friday, but my next blog will be packed with the conference recap, the 2/16/16 Commissioner's Board meeting recap, some cool fat bike pictures and more!
