Drainage update 3/3/2017

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

  • CD48 (Cambria Twp.)  There will be a preliminary hearing for the proposed improvement project for this system.  The hearing will be held next Tuesday, March 7 at 9:30am in the Commissioner’s board room.  The Commissioners board room is located on the second floor of the Blue Earth County Historic Courthouse.
  • CD12 (Mankato Twp.)  This project will have the bid awarding on the same day around 9:30.
  • CD12 (Mankato Twp.) and CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  We will be having project preconstruction meetings for both of these systems on March 20th.  Affected landowners for these projects will be getting a notice of the meeting with details in the mail very soon.

Project Updates:

  • CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  A small crew from Geislinger and Sons (contractor on this project) was on site Thursday to do a quick inspection of things including water levels.  They have no plans of starting until later in the month at best, at this point.  Road restrictions and some surface water draining are the two main factors of not starting yet, besides some still cold temperatures.
  • Many miscellaneous repairs will be going on, to various county drainage systems.  As temperatures continue to warm up we are getting more and more reports of issues on systems from across the county.  Most of these issues are smaller in scale including beaver dams on CD56 Lincoln Township.

Upcoming Drainage Events:

Just wanted to highlight a couple of upcoming drainage events.  The first event is the 2017 Agricultural Drainage Workshop.  This event is put on by ISG and a couple other sponsors.  ISG engineers, including Chuck Brandel, cover most of the topics.  Topics for this year’s seminar include; Buffer strips acquisition, Drones for surveying and ditch inspection services, updated Minnesota Public Drainage Manual, and many more.  This year’s seminar is held in Willmar, MN.  For a full listing of this year’s topics and details on times and dates click on the Link.  They ask that you RSVP for this event due to limited space.

BWSR (Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are combining their efforts to host three separate sessions to discuss the Minnesota Wetland Bank Program.  Some of the topics to be covered at these seminars include; updates to BWSR Wetland Banking Fees, Revised application forms, Wetland Delineations and Pre- project monitoring, just to list a few.  These sessions are directed towards those individuals that are currently enrolled in this program (account holders), other sponsors, agents and consultants that have dealings with Minnesota Wetland Banking Program.

The three sites chosen to hold these meetings are Grand Rapids, St. Paul and Mankato.  For more details on times and dates please follow the link.  Limited seats are available so RSVP is needed.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of February 27 – March 3:

  • CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  We continued to monitor water levels that were rising for a period of time.  Water levels have since dropped over 1.5 feet since checking last week in the open ditch.
  • CD56 (Lincoln Twp.)  There are multiple issues with sink hole areas forming on portions of the tile system.  In the open ditch, beavers were busy again and made another dam that is holding back water.  These issues will have to be fixed before spring planting if possible.
  • CD78 (Vernon Center Twp.)  Did a general inspection of parts of the open ditch on this system with the atv this week.  No major blockages were observed, just a few minor areas that may need some sediment cleaned out.

Upcoming Drainage Inspections:

  • JD38 (Sterling Twp.)
  • CD56 (Garden City Twp.)
  • JD49 (Sterling Twp.)
  • CD78 (Vernon Center Twp.) partial
  • CD01 (McPherson Twp.)
  • CD93 (Decoria Twp.)

Please call with issues you observe on our public drainage system, as there is a lot of open ditch and tile in our county and only two of us in the drainage department.  We will do our absolute best to service your issues and concerns as we receive them.
