Blue Earth County Justice Planning Committee

Justice Planning Committee

In May of 2002 the Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners appointed a Justice Planning Committee. It is the Committee's responsibility to evaluate what is precipitating jail use, but more importantly, to analyze how the overall criminal justice system is functioning. Ultimately, it is the committee's job to make the best decisions possible on behalf of Blue Earth County citizens to improve the overall criminal justice system.

Charge to the Committee

"The principal mission of the Committee is to study the Blue Earth County criminal justice system and develop recommendations regarding a system of graduated sanctions including custodial and non-custodial options. The Committee will gather and analyze data, identify opportunities for the change and suggest policies for improving system wide communication, cooperation and coordination and more effectively manage the justice system workload. The Committee is expected to communicate and present planning, financial, operational, managerial and programmatic recommendations to the County Board, the larger the Community and the agencies represented on the Committee.

The Committee is charged to provide the leadership necessary to establish cohesive public policies which are based on research, evaluation and monitoring of policy decisions. The Committee is expected to use consultants, experts in the field and technical assistance from the national Institute of Corrections to help achieve its objectives. In short, the Committee will review, evaluate and make policy recommendations on vital criminal justice system issues through a coordinated planning effort."

Committee Members

The committee is made up of a district court judge, prosecutor, public defender, court administrator, jail administration and staff, law enforcement, corrections staff, corrections experts from Minnesota State University, county and city management, a representative from District 77 schools, as well as County citizens.
