History - The Sexual Violence Resource Center:
Then and Now

The Sexual Violence Resource Center, formerly known as the Rape Crisis Center, was established in February of 1975 by three women - Norma Thorp, Janeen Aletto, and Judi McGregor.
The women, all of Mankato, Minnesota, were responding to a Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity incident. The incident included a sexual assault of a woman with a mental disability by several members of the TKE fraternity. Angered and frustrated by this incident and the lack of community intervention, these three women started meeting, picketed at the fraternity, attended university senate meetings, and ultimately launched the Rape Crisis Center. The woman also continued to reach out and educate women and the community about sexual violence through events held at Minnesota State University, Mankato and their newspaper column in The Reporter.
The newly formed Rape Crisis Center had several goals. These goals were to: provide services to victims, engage in community education and outreach, and reform the law and institutions that impact victims. Later, in the winter of 1975, The Rape Crisis Center opened its telephone line.
Today, the Blue Earth County Sexual Violence Resource Center offers free and confidential support services for survivors of sexual violence as well as engages in community education and awareness efforts. The SVRC creates a safe environment for survivors and their concerned others during this time.
