Services
The Sexual Violence Resource Center provides a wide array of services for primary and secondary victims and survivors of sexual violence. The SVRC also provides community members and organizations with public education and awareness presentations. All services provided are free and confidential.
About Sexual Violence
Sexual violence is an act -verbal, and/or physical - which breaks a person’s trust or sense of safety and is sexual in nature. Sexual violence can include, but is not limited to, adult and juvenile sexual assault, incest, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, obscene phone calls, stalking, exposing, and recent and non-recent assaults.
Services Provided
A 24-hour crisis response for victims of any form of sexual violence. A trained advocate will respond to the Law Enforcement Center, Emergency Room, or educational facility to assist victims/survivors and concerned others after an act of violence or after an assault.
An advocate, upon request, can/will provide support with and answer questions about:
The Medical Exam/Rape Kit
Criminal Justice Procedures (formal and informal reporting)
Law Enforcement (interviews, statements, evidence)
Court (trial, testifying, convictions)
Probation or Parole
Civil Options (restraining orders)
Support and information for friends and family (concerned others). Advocates, upon request, can also assist concerned others by answering questions and providing additional information.
Ongoing assistance and advocacy. Throughout the entire process, the SVRC provides continued advocacy and support. An advocate can be present to answer questions and provide support for both the victim and concerned others at any time. Advocates can also be present during additional interviews and attend court, if requested.
Resources and referral to other services. The SVRC provides resources and referral to additional services, such as short-term counseling and therapy.
Community and public education and awareness. Advocates also engage in presentations and attend community events to promote awareness and prevention of sexual violence. Advocates have spoken at public schools, colleges and universities, pride celebrations, churches, and professional trainings for businesses, law enforcement, and other professionals. To request a presentation, please call the SVRC.
About Our Advocates
The volunteer advocates of the Blue Earth County Sexual Violence Resource Center are trained professionals who are dedicated to assisting victims/survivors and their concerned others. Advocates offer options and choices and provide support, education, and assistance.
Advocates, who are both female and male, are trained to understand the difficulty and challenges victims face in recovering from this type of violence. Many of our Advocates are either enrolled or graduated from either an undergraduate or graduate program at one of the area’s colleges or universities. Our advocates are outstanding community members with diverse backgrounds. They are committed to ensuring that each victim/survivor and their family and friends receive the best services possible. In addition, each advocate has completed the State of Minnesota mandated training (Minnesota State Statute 595.02, Subd. 1 (k)).
At the request of a victim, an advocate can be present during the medical exam, law enforcement interview, and throughout the court process. A second advocate can also be present to provide additional assistance to family members or friends. Advocates work closely with human service personnel, law enforcement, and medical and other professionals to ensure the needs of each survivor and concerned other are met.
If you would like to volunteer as a Victim/Survivor Advocate, please see Volunteer and Internship Opportunities.
